Politicians lobby Minister about Island's air quality

by isleofman.com 26th February 2019

Three politicians have joined forces to express their disappointment over a lack of action on air quality on the Isle of Man.

It’s after the issue was raised in Tynwald last week.

MHKs Ralph Peake and Bill Shimmins and MLC Bill Henderson have written to the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Boot.

In the letter they write: “You have consistently refused to conduct more regular air quality monitoring beyond the current rate of once every two years.

“This is out of step with every other nation in Europe.

“Despite the concerns articulated by many members of Tynwald on various occasions you appear to be unable to grasp the serious public health damage caused by poor air quality.

“It appears that your priority is to “promulgate a good news story” rather than monitor pollution.”

The politicians call on Mr Boot to look at the approach taken by other crown dependendencies which they say is illustrative of ‘modern thinking’.

They ask him to ensure air quality monitoring is carried out monthly and the results of it are published.
