Feedback wanted on new Education Bill

by isleofman.com 30th January 2019

People on the Isle of Man are being urged to feedback on a new Education Bill.

The draft Bill, by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, is set to replace the current Education Act 2001.

Minister Graham Cregeen says: "It’s crucial that we have an up to date, forward thinking education system on the Isle of Man which will enable us to continue to provide a fantastic and effective education for the Island.

"The Education Act 2001 has been the primary legislation governing what happens in education on the Island since it came into effect in 2004.

"However the need for a new, updated Bill has become apparent over recent years and DESC has been reviewing ways in which the department can help deliver this.

"Any feedback that the public have will be gratefully welcomed by the Department, particularly in relation to aspects which have been significantly changed."

The changes will reflect education practice both in the UK and other jurisdictions and also seeks to be progressive where possible.

Among some of the changes being proposed are changes to standards for behaviour of pupils and home education arrangements, inspection of schools and school attendance.
