Former supermarket site to host Christmas markets

by isleofman.com 26th November 2018

A derelict supermarket is being re-opened just in time for Christmas.

The former Shoprite store on Chester Street in Douglas will house the food and craft markets on December 8th and 9th.

The Department of Infrastructure has prepared the interior of the building so the markets can be open between 10am and 5pm.

Town Centre Manager Oliver Cheshire says: "This means we won’t be subject to unpredictable December weather as we have been in the past when the markets were held outside along Strand Street.

"In 2016 the conditions were very poor and in 2017 we had to cancel the markets because of the weather.

"This year, though, shoppers will be able to shop in comfort and enjoy the markets which will have a continental feel to them with a huge range of craft and produce stalls and there’ll be an opportunity to sample some hot food with a distinctly international flavour, too.

"We’re delighted that the Department of Infrastructure has supported this initiative, which will enable us to use the site for the food and craft weekend.

"Thanks are also due to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture for coming on board with such enthusiasm and we’re pleased to be supporting its “Think Local. Buy Local” campaign which alerts shoppers to the statistic that every ?1 spent locally on Manx food is worth ?1.83 to the Manx economy."
