Douglas invests in new bin lift system

by isleofman.com 30th August 2018

Douglas has become the first local authority to invest in an all-electric bin lift system for its new refuse collection vehicle.

The 25-tonne narrow-width body vehicle, which accommodates a three-man crew offers greater flexibility for restricted access areas, without compromising its payload capabilities.

Environmental Services Committee Chairman Ritchie McNicholl says: “The bin lifting system relies solely on 24-volt chassis electrical power to operate the bin lifter, so not only offers fuel savings but also reduces CO2 emissions. In addition being electrically powered means it’s much quieter than a similar hydraulic unit.

"As for the new RCV its slimmer width and exceptional manoeuvrability means it is especially suited to negotiating the many narrow thoroughfares and confined spaces in Douglas, so is safer for our operatives.

“The council is always looking at ways of reducing its carbon footprint and harnessing the benefits of energy-saving technology.

“The solutions we have adopted, such as this new bin lifter and converting the borough’s street lighting lanterns to LED, are not only good for the environment, but also means savings achieved will ultimately be advantageous to the ratepayers of Douglas.”
