Plastic bag charge to benefit local community

Local groups on the Isle of Man are in line for a ?22,000 boost thanks to the Co-op.

The retailer imposed a 5p charge for single use carrier bags on Monday as a way of curbing plastic waste.

Money raised from the sale of the bags will fund the Local Community Fund.

This will then be distributed amongst local causes including:

Without Wings - The Manx Autoimmune Arthritis Trust

Ramsey Cottage Hospital League of Friends

1st Laxey Scout Group

Southern Aquatics Swimming For The Disabled

Men In Sheds Port Erin.

There are 10 Co-op stores on the Isle of Man.

John McNeill is the Divisional Managing Director at the Co-op – he says: "Together with our members and customers, we are reducing, reusing, recycling and, reinvesting in our communities."
