Plea to protect nesting terns at Point of Ayre

by isleofman.com 30th May 2018

Police are urging people to exercise caution on beaches in the north of the Island.

It’s because Artic and Little Terns have begun to return to nest.

One hotspot is the Point of Ayre where there are several colonies which are fenced off.

Officers say the area is a popular location for visiting TT bikers to ride out to – warning signs have been erected in English, German and French.

Dog walkers are also asked to keep their dogs on leads in the area.

The birds migrate tens of thousands of miles from the Southern Ocean to breed on the Isle of Man – they are protected under the Wildlife Act 1990.
