35 firefighters tackle gorse fire in Glen Maye

by isleofman.com 29th May 2018

People are being urged not to burn off materials during the current dry weather conditions.

The plea has come from the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service after 35 firefighters spent five hours tackling a gorse fire on Saturday.

They were called to Arrasey Plantation Road in Glen Maye just before 12pm after reports a bonfire had got out of control and set an area of gorse on fire.

Due to the location of the fire – and no close water main – crews employed portable pumps to get water from two ponds next to the property.

Winds meant the fire spread over an 800 metres area.

During the incident another fire was reported on the railway embankment in Castletown – it left resources stretched at a time when the roads were about to be closed for practice racing.
