Island pets now have access to keyhole surgery procedures, something that they previously had to travel to the UK to access. The team at Strand Vets have invested in brand new keyhole/ laparoscopic surgery equipment and training, meaning operations that previously resulted in large wounds and long recovery periods are much less painful and have faster recovery times.
Sophie, Molly, Daisy and Luna were the first dogs on the Isle of Man to experience the benefits when they were spayed this week. All were very brave and bounced back to the surgery 48 hours later to be given the OK from the surgical team to go back to chasing balls and swimming.
Laparoscopic surgery was pioneered in the early 1900’s with the first procedures being performed on dogs, although after this the procedure wasn’t really used until the 1990’s when it became widespread in human medicine. Now there are more and more veterinary practices in the UK using the technique and Strand Vets are pleased and proud to be able to offer this new option to the Island’s pet owners. Ciara Tinkler, Practice Principle said “We are so excited to be able to offer this at the practice now. It’s something we have been working towards for a long time to improve the welfare of the islands animals. The patients recover so quickly, it’s lovely that they can resume life as normal after just 2 days.”
