New lift for King's Court Theatre

by isleofman.com 12th October 2017

Lift facilities have been introduced at King’s Court Theatre thanks to significant financial support from Manx Lottery Trust and Friends of King William’s College.

The theatre at King William’s College opened in September 2015 (in what was formerly known as ‘Big School’) and has been the subject of a programme of refurbishment, incorporating new lighting and sound systems, in order to provide a perfect venue for productions, concerts, live streaming events and corporate presentations.

‘The inclusion of a lift is part of a long-term development project for the venue, with plans to construct a cloakroom and a bar this term,’ said King William’s College Principal Joss Buchanan. ‘In just two years, King’s Court Theatre has established itself as one of the Island’s leading venues and we are keen to build on that success.’

Manx Lottery Trust, as delegated partner of Big Lottery Fund, awarded a grant of ?25,000 towards the cost of the lift, with ?15,000 coming from the Friends of King William’s College organisation.

Theatre Manager David Dawson said: ‘We are so grateful for the support we received from Manx Lottery Trust and Friends of King William’s College. The lift will help more people enjoy the wonderful productions and live screenings we have on offer, due to this improved access.’

The theatre has a flexible stage configuration and seating, and can accommodate up to 211 people in tiered seating.

Chair of Friends of King William’s College Sue Nicholson said: ‘The Friends of KWC are delighted to be able to contribute to the installation of the lift. Not only will it be a great asset to King’s Court, but the lift will provide valuable access to the Barrovian Hall, enabling current and past parents, friends and alumni to attend events which otherwise would have been inaccessible to them.’

Manx Lottery Trust Chairman Lulu Gillow said: ‘Lottery Trust was extremely pleased to support the College’s King’s Court initiative by providing funding for a lift. It is hoped that by affording greater access to the theatre, a larger proportion of the Manx community will be able to enjoy some, or all, of the varied programme of events held in this excellent and valued venue. We wish them well for their future development.’

King’s Court Theatre is available for hire. For more details, please contact david.dawson@kwc.im.
