Celton Manx is to sponsor Douglas Borough Council’s public fireworks display for the seventh successive year.
The event will be held on Friday November 3 starting at 7.15pm when the Mayor of Douglas Debbie Pitts will lead the judging for the Best Guy competition, with the awards of ?100, ?50 and ?25 for first, second and third places respectively to be presented later in the month in the mayor’s parlour at Douglas town hall.
At 7.30pm the bonfire will be lit then at 7.40pm the fireworks display, set to music, will be fired from a barge moored opposite the Douglas war memorial, the area from where spectators are encouraged to watch the event and where catering outlets will also be located.
3FM, the council’s media partner for the event, will be broadcasting live coverage of the display.
Regeneration and community committee chairman Stephen Pitts said: ‘The council is extremely grateful to Celton Manx for their continued sponsorship of the fireworks display, an eagerly anticipated and extremely popular community event attracting visitors from all over the island. A lot of effort and hard work go into the preparations carried out by council staff to ensure a spectacular display which this year promises some extra surprises.’
Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said: ‘The council’s fireworks display provides a safe and secure setting for what is always a great family night out, which also attracts people to the town centre, so can benefit local business such as cafes, restaurants and bars. Celton Manx is therefore pleased to be sponsoring for the seventh year in succession what has become one of the largest community events in Douglas.’
Entries for the Best Guy competition must be submitted between 6.45 and 7.10pm at the staged area in the vicinity of the war memorial.
Parking will be suspended from 3 until 9.30pm on Harris Promenade east side where traffic will be restricted to a single lane (southbound) between Broadway and a point opposite the northernmost end of the Marine Gardens from 6 to 9.30pm. (Free parking available in Chester Street car park).
Should circumstances such as unfavourable sea and/or weather conditions or technical issues dictate that the event has to be cancelled on Friday November 3, the council has contingency plans in place and obtained occasional music licences for Saturday November 4 and Sunday November 5 so that the display can be staged over that weekend. Any changes to the planned schedule will be communicated as soon as possible via the council’s social media channels and broadcast by its media partner, 3FM.
In the interests of safety spectators are requested not to bring pets or their own fireworks, including sparklers, onto the site.
