Rushen Silver Band Gala Concert to raise money for Salvation Army and Chris Lucas Trust

by isleofman.com 5th October 2017

Rushen Silver Band are performing a Gala Concert on Saturday 21st October at Rushen Primary School with guest conductor Richard Evans and guest soloist Bobby Corkish.

Richard Evans, one of the most sought after musical directors in the brass band world, has been working with the band for over 10 years, and always puts together a special concert.

Bobby Corkish started learning to play the tenor horn in Rushen Silver Band, and is now an established member of The Fairey Band, one of the most celebrated brass bands in the world.

Proceeds from the concert will be split between The Salvation Army and The Chris Lucas Trust. The Salvation Army does a great deal of work within the community on the island, while the Chris Lucas Trust funds research in to defeating rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, the strain that afflicted band member Alistair Drinkwater in his teens. This marks 20 years since Alistair passed away. The Alistair Drinkwater Memorial Fund was set up following Alistair’s passing, and the fund has been used to bring world class conductors and soloists to the island to work with the band, and also with students at Castle Rushen High School.

Tom Sinden, chairman of Rushen Silver Band said: “It is wonderful to once again be able to welcome the brilliant Richard Evans over to the island to work with the band. We are also delighted to have Bobby Corkish coming back to perform as guest soloist for the evening. This year marks 20 years since the tragic loss of band member Alistair Drinkwater, and the Memorial Fund set up in his name by his parents Eric and Barbara has enabled visits from many of the world's leading lights. Bobby is a wonderful tenor horn player who started learning in the band, and is a great demonstration of what is possible with the tuition and inspiration given from world class conductors and soloists, coupled with many years’ hard work on Bobby's part. It would be great to see as many people as possible at the concert to raise money for two such worthy causes.”

Tickets for the concert are ?7.50, ?1 for under 18s, and are available on the door. The concert starts at 7.30pm.
