Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK will lead a senior Isle of Man Government delegation attending next week’s Conservative Party autumn conference.
The visit will be used to strengthen relations with influential figures in the UK Government and to raise further awareness of the Island’s value to the British economy.
The presence in Manchester of Mr Quayle, Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan MHK and Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK continues the Island’s programme of proactive engagement with the UK’s main political parties.
During the conference, the Isle of Man delegation plans to attend a range of events, receptions and debates focusing on Brexit and EU law, innovation, tax, UK trade strategy and the Northern Powerhouse initiative. Discussions are also expected to be held with members of the cabinet, ministers, peers, senior policy advisors and business leaders.
The Chief Minister said: ‘We are experiencing a period of great change in the world’s political and economic landscape. It is important for the Isle of Man Government to be represented at the autumn conferences and gain a first-hand insight into the prevailing mood music in British politics. It will be helpful to gather further intelligence about the Conservative Party’s vision for the UK after leaving the European Union.’
He added: ‘The conference in Manchester will also provide an opportunity to promote a deeper understanding of the Isle of Man and its positive contribution to the UK and wider global community. It is vital to our reputation and future prosperity that our position as an enterprising, open and responsible country is conveyed to key political and business audiences. One of the best ways to achieve that is to get out there and meet people face-to-face.’
The Chief Minister and Policy & Reform Minister Chris Thomas MHK had been scheduled to attend the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, but poor weather disrupted their travel arrangements.
Mr Quayle said: ‘While it was disappointing to miss the Labour conference, we will maintain our dialogue with the party to build on our existing strong links and ensure there is an awareness and appreciation of the Isle of Man’s interests.’
