Braddan Commissioners, Garff Commissioners and the Department of Infrastructure are to pilot a shared housing waiting list in the east of the Island.
The scheme, which will go live with immediate effect, meets one of the Programme for Government objectives, as part of work to support an inclusive and caring Island.
Similar to the initiative in place in the south of the Island, the cloud-based technology will improve efficiency and increase consistency when assessing applications and allocating housing in the eastern region.
The shared housing waiting list will provide public sector tenants with access to a wider geographical area and a greater number of properties. It also strengthens the working relationship between the Department and local authorities, with the focus on providing effective housing services that meet tenants’ needs.
Andrew Jessopp of Braddan Commissioners said: ‘I am delighted that the shared list is going live. This will enhance people’s prospects of being allocated a property that meets their needs. The response from our existing applicants has been very encouraging.’
Nigel Dobson, Chairman of Garff Commissioners, added: ‘We welcome the opportunity to work with Braddan Commissioners and the Department of Infrastructure. Shared waiting lists have been shown to have a positive impact in local communities and this initiative will increase choice for tenants in the east of the Island.’
Onchan District Commissioners have declined the invitation to participate in the eastern shared housing waiting list at this time. Consequently, any applicants wishing to live in Onchan should apply directly to Onchan District Commissioners.
