Final preparations for the sixth Commonwealth Youth Games are well under way, with less than one month until Team Isle of Man leaves for the Bahamas.
President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association Basil Bielich visited the athletes at the NSC to find out how training and preparations are progressing.
Dr Frank Vaughan, who is leading the team’s medical support, also gave a talk to the competitors to help them learn how to cope with jet lag and dealing with the challenges of performing in the high temperatures they will face in the Bahamas.
Basil said: ‘I would like to congratulate all the athletes who have been selected for the team. Not only is it a fantastic experience to be able to compete at an international level but is also a great honour to be representing the Isle of Man.
‘I hope they enjoy this amazing event and I am sure they will do us all proud.’
The eight-strong team consists of swimmers Joel Watterson, Kazia Whittaker, Emma Hodgson and Euan MacMurchie, cyclists Thomas Bostock, Will Draper and Tara Ferguson, and runner David Mullarkey.
The team will travel on 16th July to Nassau, Bahamas, via the United States accompanied by Team Leader Rosemary Kinley and three Sport Team Managers. The medical team accompanying the athletes consists of Dr Frank Vaughn and physiotherapists Ruth Cooil and Wendy Shallcross.
The Games run from 19th to 23rd July and sees athletes aged 14–18 from 71 nations and territories competing.
