IoM Archery Club Report 28th May

by isleofman.com 30th May 2017

Only seven archers turned up at Greeba to shoot on Sunday. Conditions were difficult, with a stiff breeze blowing diagonally across the field right to left. This meant that the right handed archers had the wind blowing directly into their faces making their eyes water which naturally had an impact on their ability to aim. Although the rain had stopped conditions were soggy underfoot and somewhat chilly. The round of the day was a WA1440 but Simon Musgrove and Matt Elliott could only stay for the morning session and so shot a Long Metric.
It was not the day to be setting any club records and with the wind either blowing the arrows over to the left or buffeting the archers as they aimed almost everyone had difficulty with the longer distances and by the half way stage all were well down on their usual scores.
The sun came out during the lunch break and the temperatures rose. The three juniors who turned up in the afternoon had the best of things. Nathan Kinrade managed to stay close to his best in spite of the wind but James Hill seemed a little out of sorts. Toby Young, who turned up late, was forced to shoot an adult Short Metric round as the field had already been set. He was therefore the only person to record a personal best score on the day as he had never shot the round before.

Dave and Rhys Moore who had travelled off the island had better fortunes over the weekend. They met up with England based Ethan Moore to take part in a shoot at Penrith. On the Saturday they shot a WA1440 and, in spite of changeable weather which saw high temperatures, wind, rain and thunderstorms, Rhys finished second in the Men’s Compound with Dave third and Ethan fifth.

On the Sunday they shot in a Double WA50, conditions were windy at first but settled down into a decent shooting day. All three archers recorded personal best scores which saw Rhys take first place with Dave finishing in third.

On Monday the Moores travelled to Meriden to compete in the Stephanie Hall Memorial WA1440 where they were joined by Natasha Richardson for her first ever competition. The weather was changeable with rain for most of the day. Ethan and Rhys were tied after 90m but a miss at 70m for Ethan meant that Rhys took the lead and remained there to finish with a season’s best score. Ethan added 21 points to his pb for the round while Dave finished 8 points adrift of Ethan but still recorded a decent score.
