The Manx Youth Sailing Squad (MYSS) is charting the way to success with the support of leading offshore law firm Appleby.
The sponsorship is particularly fitting following Appleby’s appointment as official law firm of the 35th America’s Cup, an international sailing competition hosted in Bermuda during May and June 2017. As part of this sponsorship the firm wants to bring the excitement of the event to all its clients, colleagues and communities across each of the 10 jurisdictions it operates in, including the Isle of Man.
Appleby Isle of Man’s sponsorship of MYSS will allow the squad to continue providing top-level coaching to young sailors and prepare them for national and international events.
The MYSS hosts four training weekends each year, run by RYA-trained race coaches, and assists with co-ordinating and funding travel to and from competitions.
MYSS coach Donald Edwards said: “We are grateful to Appleby for its sponsorship, which allows us to continue and expand the coaching and competition opportunities we provide. This support will also go towards the upkeep of the RS TERAs, the dinghies used for training and during races.
“In recent years the team has done really well, with podium finishes at the UK Inlands and UK Nationals last year, and with Appleby’s support we are aiming to continue that success during 2017.”
Christopher Cope, Partner and Group Head of the Dispute Resolution department, said: “This is a really exciting year for Appleby as the official law of the 35th America’s Cup and we are excited to bring the event to the Manx community by sponsoring MYSS as part of our ongoing celebrations.
“We are pleased to extend our commitment to the Isle of Man’s strong maritime heritage and support its continuation and development by encouraging talented young sailors.”
The squad’s first training sessions of the year was held in late April and the season will finish with the full team competing at the National Championship at the end of August.
