IoM Archery Club Report - 1st May

by isleofman.com 2nd May 2017

After a field inspection on the Sunday and with weather forecasts predicting 40mph winds it was decided that shooting would be cancelled for the day. The Club then re-assembled on the Bank Holiday Monday afternoon many wearing layers against the cold and waterproofs against the wind and potential rain. These layers were quickly shed and sunblock was what was required as Greeba basked in the May sunshine. The round of the day was a 720 – that is 72 arrows at a single distance, 70m for Recurve and 50m for Compound. The Juniors shot distances in accordance with their age group/gender.

Rhys Moore took an early lead in the Gents Compound division and never lost it in spite of having two misses. The fight for second place was a close run thing between Dave Moore and Billy Lightfoot which Billy just nicked by two points, adding 5 points to his pb for the round in the process. Pete Mumford took a leisurely approach to the day following a recent illness to come fourth. Simon Musgrove also began the shoot but his head was not in the game and he abandoned the shoot after the first dozen arrows.

Joy Gough had a nightmare of a day with too many arrows in the blue zone on top of three misses producing an under par score.

The Gents Recurve was a straight face off between Danny Cowin and Josh Trafford. Danny had the lead over the first dozen arrows but Josh turned it round over the next dozen even though he had a miss. The slim lead stretched out to 17 points by the fourth dozen and then to 24 points going into the last twelve arrows. Here Josh seemed to lose focus just as Danny found some form. Danny put in his best dozen total of the day to close the gap to just 11 points but Josh took the win.

In the Ladies Recurve Barbara Harris had a miss either side of the break but managed to add 23 points to her pb for the round to break the 500 barrier for the first time.

The three Juniors who turned up to shoot made the most of the excellent weather as each one produced personal best scores. It was the youngest competitor, Jacob Brookes shooting 30m, who took the win on the day adding 3 points to his pb in the process. James Hill shooting the 40m distance added 44 points to his pb to come second, while Tilly Ashton added an amazing 132 points to her pb to finish third.
