More than 30 young golfers contest first round of Dandara Junior Order of Merit

The first round of the 2017 Dandara Junior Order of Merit, held at King Edward Bay Golf Club on Sunday, saw 33 young golfers from all over the Island competing, and some great scores achieved.

In the Under 18 section Tommy Fenlon took first place in the 18-hole event, with a 70 gross/66 nett, from up and coming Tom Cain, who hit 84 gross/67 nett.

In the Under 14 section, also over 18 holes, Sam Crawford took first with a fantastic of 90 gross/62 nett, the best score of the day. Matthew Bell came in second on 96 gross/68 nett.

The 9-hole competition saw the first prize go to Jack Higgins with 19 points, while second went to Scott Moffatt on 16. And in the 6-hole competition two players recorded 18 points, with the honours going to Owen Dooley on countback from Jenna Crawford.

Callum Hunter led the way in the Flag competition with his 36 shots taking him to the 12th hole. Second was a joint affair with Reggie Oaswood and Adam Holt both reaching the 11th. These 3 junior players will now receive their Junior Handicap of 54 and advance to the 6-hole competition next time.

The Junior Order of Merit was launched with assistance from England Golf in 2014 with the aim of encouraging youngsters to get involved in the sport and to develop a pathway to becoming better players and continuing with golf as a sport for life. Contested by boys and girls together, it is split into sections to cater for all levels of ability, including full rounds for Under 18s and Under 14s, 9-hole and 6-hole competitions for younger and less experienced players, and a flag competition for beginners.

This is the second season it has been sponsored by award-winning developer Dandara, which is also title sponsor of Isle of Man Golf’s Junior Championships, which take place in July.

Isle of Man Golf President Dee Lewis said: ‘Congratulations to all the juniors and their supporters, who had a great afternoon, and many thanks to Dandara for its continued support for junior golf in the Isle of Man.’

The full list of prize winners was: Tommy Fenlon (Douglas), Tom Cain (Mount Murray), Sam Crawford (Mount Murray), Mathew Bell (Ramsey), Jack Higgins (Ramsey), Scott Moffatt (Peel), Owen Dooley (Douglas), Jenna Crawford (Mount Murray), Callum Hunter (Mount Murray), Reggie Oaswood (Mount Murray) and Adam Holt (Mount Murray).

The second round of the Dandara Junior Order of Merit will be held at Peel Golf Club on Sunday 7th May. Entries can be made through club junior organisers and information will be displayed at all clubs.
