Long-serving Manx advocate John Quinn has today (Friday 17 March 2017) been officially sworn in as Attorney General in the Isle of Man.

Mr Quinn took the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Attorney General at Government House. The Warrant of Appointment was given by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.

Mr Quinn was also appointed Queen’s Counsel (QC) on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor of Great Britain.

The Lieutenant Governor said: ‘The Attorney General plays a fundamental role in maintaining the Isle of Man’s reputation as a modern democratic nation. There will be many challenges in his time ahead and I am confident that Mr Quinn will ensure our local and international interests are well protected. His experience and firm leadership are exactly what the Attorney General’s Chambers requires in these changing times.’

Mr Quinn, who has served as Acting Attorney General since March 2013,  will act as legal adviser to the Lieutenant Governor, Council of Ministers, Government Departments and Statutory Boards. He will also attend sittings of Tynwald and the Legislative Council.

The Attorney General is required to offer guidance on matters of law and issues relating to the Isle of Man's domestic and external interests. He is also responsible for representing the Crown in the prosecution of offences and for the drafting of Government legislation.

A Past President of the Isle of Man Law Society, Mr Quinn will bring a wealth of experience to the role having successfully managed and developed several legal practices over a 30-year career in Manx advocacy.

Mr Quinn said: ‘I am honoured to be appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to the position of Attorney General and also to be made a QC. I will endeavour to serve the Crown and the Isle of Man to the best of my abilities. I have enjoyed the challenge of the past four years and look forward to continuing to lead the work of the Attorney General’s Chambers.’
