Local Expert speaking at WordCamp London

by isleofman.com 23rd February 2017

Local entrepreneur and technologist Owen Cutajar has been invited to speak at this year’s Wordcamp London. He will be presenting on ways in which WordPress sites can get hacked and measures that site owners can take to prevent their websites being defaced and exploited.

WordCamp is a conference conducted across the globe to discuss opportunities and issues in relation to using WordPress for blogging, social media, business and more. The first WordCamp was held in 2006 in San Francisco by Matt Mullenweg, who had created WordPress at the age of 19. Since then, hundreds of similar conferences have been held all around the world. WordCamp London has been running since 2013 and is aimed at anybody who uses, builds or simply has an interest in WordPress; including bloggers, designers, developers and end-users.

“It’s wonderful to be asked to talk about two things I’m really interested in”, Owen told us. “I’ve been building websites with WordPress and developing plugins for it for over 10 years, and cybersecurity has been a passion of mine ever since I can remember.”

Owen is a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and has helped several organisations detect and defend against cybercrime. “WordPress is particularly interesting in this space”, he continued. “A company’s website is a shop window to their services, providing a highly visible target for criminal or malicious actors. It is imperative that this public front is protected and maintained secure, both for the organisation and their clients.”

Owen runs a small consultancy called Future Tech Ltd, which specializes in helping clients embrace new technology with services ranging from advising on IT strategy all the way to technology implementations, especially around websites and mobile applications.

“WordPress has been a great tool for us to deliver and maintain websites cost-effectively for our clients. Speaking at WordCamp will be a great way to give back to the WordPress community, share what we have learnt in protecting our online estate and even promote the Isle of Man to a community of entrepreneurs and IT companies.”

WordCamp London runs over a weekend from 17th March till 19th March, hosted by the London Metropolitan University.
