Lesley Sleight recently competed for England in the International Field Archery Association (IFAA) World Field Championships. 625 archers from 16 countries descended on Wagga Wagga, South Australia. The largest archery event ever held in Australia.
Lesley won the Silver medal for England in the Ladies' longbow class. After the first days field round Lesley found herself in third position. A personal best score on the second day hunters round kept her in medal contention. The final day was an animal round and Lesley shot extremely well improving her personal best score by over a 100 points. This put her into Silver medal position just two points ahead of USA's Christine Skubish. Ulle Kell from Estonia took the Gold medal and World Title.
Lesley also won a bronze medal for England in the longbow team event with team mates Bruno and Claude Rouschmeyer. NewZealand took gold and Australia the silver.
England performed well picking up 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Championships.
Lesley said “I am extremely pleased with my performance especially putting in two personal best scores over the three days and I'm proud to win medals for England. The competition was to be held over five days but due to poor weather it was reduced to three days of intense competition. I couldn't have asked for a better way to finish off the season. I have had a great year competing for Great Britain and England and winning the All British, England and Scottish Championships in my bow class has been a great achievement.”
