Manx Telecom continues to invest in IT recruitment

by isleofman.com 2nd September 2016

Manx Telecom’s investment in pioneering new technology is making the company the employer of choice for young IT professionals. That’s the view of the company’s Human Resources Director, John McChesney, who was speaking after the latest announcements about the company’s continuing recruitment drive to support its strategy for growth.

Mr McChesney commented: “Because Manx Telecom has an impressive history of pioneering new technology – and the fact that we also have ambitious plans to remain at the industry’s cutting edge – we’re fast becoming the ‘go to’ company for young IT professionals looking to work in an exciting and dynamic environment with tremendous opportunities to learn new skills and work with world class technology. In recent months our technical teams have won awards for virtualising our fixed network, and worked with Cisco and Nimble to develop new protocols. Our philosophy is to encourage our technicians to push the boundaries of what is possible, and explore new ideas. This is the key reason why we are able to continue to recruit such highly qualified and experienced employees.”

The latest appointments are Chris Larkham (Solutions Architect within the company’s Technology Strategy and Solutions team), and Matthew Webb (Hosting and Managed Networks Technical Specialist).

Chris Larkham is returning to Manx Telecom where he worked from 2006 until December 2015. He has a BSc degree in Computer Science and Information Technology from The Open University, and has also built up a range of technical skills and experience during his career, covering operating system and system administration, networking and storage, and scripting/programming.

Matthew Webb joins Manx Telecom from Zurich Financial Services where he worked for 16 years. Since 2012 he was IT Service Support Manager, a role which saw him manage a team of seven in the Isle of Man, in addition to being Matrix Manager to staff based in Dubai. He was also responsible for managing and supporting Zurich’s Isle of Man disaster recovery process. Matthew’s qualifications include industry recognised accreditations from Cisco.

In the last 18 months or so Manx Telecom’s business expansion has enabled it to create a number of new jobs. Many of these are high-end technical roles, or roles which require specific fields of expertise which the company needs as it continues to develop pioneering new products and services. In addition, Manx Telecom has also launched a new Apprenticeship Programme with support from the Manx ICT Association (MICTA) and Department of Economic Development, with the first recruits expected to start soon.

Manx Telecom, which employs nearly 300 people, offers many employee benefits, including an award winning Sharesave Scheme which was established through YBS Share Plans. Around 90% of employees who meet relevant eligibility criteria have joined the scheme.
