Tickets for the “50yrs at Ballaughton Dinner” on Friday 7 October at The Empress Hotel are now available from our Social Secretary, Kirsten Hall or any Committee member. Tickets are ?25 a three course meal and reception drink but registered members of the club will have a ?5 discount. Our guest of honour will be the President of the Lawn Tennis Association, Mrs Cathie Sabin and her husband. During the evening our major fundraising Tombola will be drawn. Prizes include a voucher for car and two passengers donated by IOM Steam Packet Company, a ?200 voucher for www.tennisnuts.com, at least 5 boxes of Thornton’s chocolates, three bottles of champagne, a Waitrose hamper donated by Shoprite, a picnic hamper full of food, 1 doz tennis balls etc. Will all members who still have tickets to sell please try and do so early and return counterfoils and money to me so that I can judge if I need more tickets printed. Yes – tickets are going well so far. All members are asked to sell at least one book of 10 tickets, although the committee hope members will try to sell more. Proceeds will be used to clear the loans taken out by the club to pay for re-surfacing our courts with first class cushioned acrylic which everyone agrees is a great success. Since the courts were re-laid membership has increased and the club is usually very busy. It was a good committee decision to upgrade the courts – we all like a good surface to play on.
The Mixed Doubles leagues are underway and so far our A and B teams are doing well. Some results I have received are Castletown B 0 – Albany A 6, Port Erin A 0 – Albany B 6 and Albany B 3 – Castletown D 3. One thing to note is that Charlotte Clarke, aged just 11 is playing in the B team and she and her partner, Gareth Roome are winning quite few sets. I personally love to see our juniors being selected for league matches, so well done Charlotte.
Another reminder about Presidents Day Sunday 25 September – there will be a list in the clubroom to put your names down for this annual Senior/ Junior yellow ball event. Entries can also be e-mailed to Bryan Sharp - ballabreck@manx.net. Entry fee is ?3 for seniors and ?2 for juniors proceeds this year will go to The Friends of the Children of Chernobyl
The Club Senior Championships start on Saturday 10th September and entries close on Tuesday 6 September at 6pm. If you’re going to club night why not fill in a form and challenge the usual players. The event is sponsored by Auxesia Ltd and there is no entry fee.
Finally – will all members who ever use the outdoor floodlights please check their tennis bags for spare tokens. We had 50 but now have 10 and have had to order another batch
