PwC Isle of Man has promoted Johann Marais to Director of its actuarial services practice.
A Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Johann joined PwC in 2007 and has more than 14 years’ experience in a range of actuarial consultancy roles, including employee benefits and financial risk management consultancy.
Johann has extensive knowledge of the offshore insurance and pensions sectors and advises financial services clients on insurance reserving, pension scheme valuations, and risk and capital modelling.
‘It is an exciting opportunity to be leading the firm’s actuarial services practice,’ Johann said. ‘The practice started with just one person and has grown to a team of five consultants, with ambitions to keep growing the practice even further.
‘The actuarial services practice has evolved in my time with the firm from providing mostly audit support to our clients within the life insurance industry to now providing actuarial consultancy services to a wide variety of clients from varying industries. These range from industries in which actuaries traditionally play a role, like the life insurance, non-life insurance and pension industries, to some non-traditional industries such as the public sector, fund industry and legal profession.
‘Our actuarial consultancy services range from appointed actuary and scheme actuary roles for life insurance companies and pension schemes respectively, to building cash flow projection models for use in injury and employment tribunal cases.’
Johann added: ‘There are big challenges on the horizon for our local market. Whether it is the challenges brought on by market volatility due to the EU referendum vote, or regulatory changes like the introduction of risk-based capital requirements, we know our clients need help understanding the potential effects on their business.
‘Irrespective of the industry, we strive to be at the forefront helping our clients turn their challenges into opportunities, using our analytical skills to help companies make critical business decisions through a better understanding of their business risks and its financial consequences.’
Ian Clague, Senior Partner, commented: ‘Johann has played a central role in shaping and growing our actuarial services practice. His continued commitment, expertise and experience have enabled us to develop our in-house capabilities to a level that no other accountancy firm on the Island can offer. I look forward to seeing Johann prosper in his new role while continuing to provide excellent client services and nurturing the talented team around him.’
