Laxey Under 16s Miners win Nottingham International Cup

by isleofman.com 5th August 2016
Players from Laxey Football Club’s under-16 Miners team are celebrating after they won their age group category at the prestigious Nottingham International Cup final last weekend.

The attendance at the event with over 1500 other young people from around the world followed nearly 9 months of fund raising on the Island at bag packs, bingo nights and car washes in order to raise funds for the team to attend.

Over 150 junior football teams from some 14 countries attended the tournament which was run over 4 days in Nottingham using the University campus facilities last week and saw Laxey represent the Island against teams from as far a field as Uganda and Canada.

Laxey won there first group match against a team from Uganda 7.0 and also had a very close match with Rochdale FC’s professional academy junior team.

In a closely matched final against a very strong and well organised regional team from Toronto in Canada the match ended goalless but Laxey came through as worthy winners by winning an exciting penalty shootout 3 -2.

The tournament marked the end of a 10 year journey for the team and coaches as they now move into senior football and many of the players will be playing in senior teams in Manx football this season and maybe some will represent the Island senior team as well in the future.
