It’s been another busy week at the club with the Senior Open Tournament sponsored by Chrystals Estate Agents, plus the junior/mini Summer Camps being run by club coach Ian Watson and general court use by members.
So far the tournament has been run in good weather although Tuesday and Wednesday required the indoor court. Sadly the women’s event had to be cancelled due to lack of entries. The men however are enthusiastic for competition and the Men’s Singles is being run in three groups. Results so far: Men’s singles Group 1 – 1st rd Stuart Colligon bt Jabrane Moutiq 6/7(4) 7/6(4) (13-11), Sasha Thomas bt Craig Swann 6/2 7/5, Nerijus Gricevicius w/o Rob Orr, Dean Morgan bt Ben Cunningham 6/3 6/1, Jonny Weir bt Yannis Xirotyris 6/0 6/0. It’s good to see several younger juniors entering a senior event. It gives them extra match experience without having to make expensive trips to the UK for competition. Finals Day is Sunday 7th with prize presentation by Shane Magee of Chrystals at approximately 2pm. A buffet lunch will be provided for all finalists plus any other competitors and friends who come to support the players. Albany LTC is very grateful to Chrystals Estate Agents who have been sponsoring this event for many, many years.
I think there are still a few places available in the Summer Camp sessions being held during the school holidays for junior and mini tennis players. It was good to see two of our older juniors Sean Drewry and Jay Skelcher Maxwell assisting club coach Ian Watson with the Mini sessions on Tuesday. It is a policy of the club that juniors are involved in all activities – they are the future of the club and need to learn all aspects of running Albany, which is complex and time consuming. So volunteers of all ages are needed from time to time. The next big effort is the sale of our Grand Tombola tickets, which will be drawn on Friday 7 October at our special dinner at The Empress Hotel .
