Here’s a welcome sight for golfers who want to speed up their rounds - or who find the prospect of 18 holes on foot a bit challenging!
This gleaming new fleet of state-of-the-art electric golf buggies has just been teed up at Mount Murray Golf Club - to help players navigate the undulating championship course more conveniently.
Comis, the Club’s new owners, who have ambitious redevelopment plans for the entire hotel complex, are confident the arrival of the silent, eco-friendly four wheeled transport will drive golfers back on to the fairways – literally!
And with each of the 31 zero-emission buggies costing non-members just ?12 to hire per round, the Club reckon there’s never been a better time to play the scenic 6356-yard Santon course.
The vehicles, which should make it possible to complete a round in under three hours, are purposely designed not to disturb other golfers. And given their long battery life, every buggy is geared up to cover at least 36 holes a day, before re-charging is necessary.
Resident Mount Murray Pro, Allyn Laing, believes the “new invasion” will lure many more golfers, on and off the Island, to play at Mount Murray. “Golf is a game for all age groups,” he said. “We want to make sure our superbly laid out course can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to quicken their pace of play, as well as those who simply might be over-faced by the terrain. Speeding up the game is good for everybody. So buggy hire offers a win-win situation – whatever score you shoot.”
Meanwhile, following the installation of new netting, the Club has also reinstated its popular 24-bay driving range – the only facility of its kind on the Island. As with the golf itself, the range is open to both members and non-members.
Whilst work continues on a complete overhaul of the Hotel, to be called Comis at Mount Murray, the Golf Club and Restaurant has remained open to the public throughout the building programme. Upgraded dining facilities have already proved a popular draw and the clubhouse has retained its status as one of the Island’s leading conference and banqueting venues, with Comis confirming that bookings for weddings and events is now at its highest level since the new owners came on board.
