Isle of Man Archery Club Report - 31st July

by isleofman.com 2nd August 2016

Thirteen members of the IoM Archery Club met at Greeba on Sunday to shoot a National round as part of the Club’s Handicap League. The adults shot a York/Hereford round according to gender and the juniors shot according to their age group. The scratch scores were then subjected to a handicap to produce the overall result.

Weather conditions were good and the threat of rain never materialized but a number of the archers found the going heavy. The York/Hereford round consists of 12 dozen arrows shot in a 6/4/2 split at distances of 100y/80y/60y for the Gents and 80y/60y/50y for the Ladies. Shooting 6 dozen arrows at a single distance is rather tedious and, as the National rounds themselves are rarely shot in competition any more, the Club includes them in the Leagues mainly for the sake of tradition.

Rhys Moore once again put in the highest scratch Compound score of the day, with Dave Moore in second and Pete Mumford recording a season’s best score to finish third. After handicapping they came in 5th, 4th and 11th respectively.

Josh Trafford and Danny Cowin continued their private war in the Recurve division. Josh came out on top in the scratch scores, adding 71 points to his pb and breaking the u18’s Club Record by 56 points. However Danny finished ahead of Josh after the handicap was applied.

Lone Compound Lady Joy Gough was shooting the round with her new arrows for the first time and found that her sight marks were off. The time it took to dial in new sight marks put a dent in her score and after handicapping Joy finished 9th. Barbara Harris, the only Lady Recurver in evidence had no excuses for her dismal performance. Seven misses and too many low scoring arrows saw Harris finish dead last after handicapping.

Colin Moore, who shot a New National round (4 dozen arrows at 100y and 2 dozen at 80yards), was the highest placed adult after the handicap was applied coming in in 3rd place.

It was the Juniors however who seemed to make the most of the day. Jacob Brookes put in a 6 Gold End on his way to the overall win. Toby Young took the scratch honours in his Bristol III battle with James Hill, to post a new personal best score of 915, which was also a New u14 Club Record. James did well on his own account, adding a marvellous 142 to his pb for the round, which put him in second place after the handicap was applied. Nathan Kinrade shot a Short Junior National for the first time and his efforts were good enough for 7th place.

Results: National Round Handicap – 1. J.Brookes 1445 (71/575/41), 2. J.Hill 1444 (132/756/21)pb, 3. C.Moore 1430 (71/537/29), 4. D.Moore 1427 (143/1175/95), 5. R.Moore 1421 (144/1210/105), 6.
