Manx Telecom has upgraded the Island’s fixed line phone network to a software based, cloud computing platform which in the longer-term will make it possible to introduce new and faster services for consumers and businesses. The company’s latest investment in communications infrastructure ensures that the Island is keeping pace with fixed line technology being introduced by all of the world’s leading telecoms operators.
Kevin Paige, Manx Telecom Customer Services and Technology Director, said: “Using a software based, cloud computing platform for fixed line networks is where the industry is moving. It’s the future for all modern fixed line networks. We’re delighted with the success of this migration to the new platform which was completed in partnership with Metaswitch – one of the world’s leading communications network software providers – and by utilising Manx Telecom’s wealth of experience and skills in cloud technology. It’s a much more efficient and flexible system which will allow us to continue to provide the best available services to all of our customers. This is also another example of Manx Telecom continuing to invest in communications infrastructure which plays such an important role in maintaining the Isle of Man’s reputation as a world class international business centre.”
Metaswitch is a major player in the transition to cloud-based, software-centric, IP-based networks around the world, and the company serves more than 1,000 network operators and suppliers.
Martin Lund, CEO of Metaswitch, commented: “Innovative network operators like Manx Telecom are transforming their networks so they can better meet the needs of modern consumers. Manx Telecom has quietly and purposefully differentiated themselves as possibly the first operator to move their entire subscriber base onto a virtual switching core. This is a remarkable achievement and testimony to their commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction through rapid adoption of our industry’s leading technologies.”
Manx Telecom has a history of innovation in communications technology, including being Europe’s first operator to implement a fully digital telephone network in 1989, and in 2001 it became Europe’s first operator to launch 3G mobile services. The company also launched the Island’s first 4G mobile broadband network in 2014. Over the last decade it has invested ?110million in the Island’s telecommunications infrastructure.
