Southerners edge eight goal contest

Rushen fought back to defeat last year’s beaten Junior Cup finalists on Saturday.

The southerners won 5-3 at Corinthians in the first round of the Ascot Hotel sponsored competition.

The hosts led at one stage with goals from Robert Bentley (two) and Nigel Moody before Rushen hit back with Andrew Moody among their scorers as he netted twice.

Old Boys saw off St George’s 5-0 at the Bowl, with Dean France (two), Chris Clinton, Ryan Edge and James Murphy the marksmen.

Braddan won 4-0 at Douglas & District, courtesy of Michael Hutton (two), John McMullen and Ryan Healey goals.

Gymns ran out 3-1 winners over Onchan at Tromode.

Niall Stoddard scored for the visitors.

In the only preliminary round tie, Ramsey defeated Malew 5-1.

A hat-trick from Dominic Parish, one from Jamie Garrett and one from Kieran Leece ensured they were too strong for the Combination Two side whose cause wasn’t helped when they had to play most of the match with 10 man following an early sending-off.

In the sole game in the Canada Life Premier League, Laxey bounced back from a disappointing spell to defeat rock bottom Ramsey Youth Centre.

The Miners won 4-2 at Glen Road against battling opponents who are all but down.
