Advice not to leave valuables on view

An Island insurance broker is warning drivers not to leave valuables on display in their vehicles - or risk having a theft claim refused.

The advice comes from Douglas-based Rossborough Insurance which is highlighting firms' reluctance to cover losses for theft when items were in clear view from outside - whether or not the policy holder's car was locked.

Managing director Tim Rattray says in those circumstances, both car and home insurers may be within their rights not to pay.

Most car policies cover the owner for some personal possessions in the event of a theft, but often for no more than £100. 

Mr Rattray says domestic insurance policies covering possessions outside the home could also be compromised, if items stolen were visible.
