Brewery sees new use for Carnival

An historic pub in central Douglas could soon disappear for good – if an Island brewery wins planning permission.

Heron and Brearley, based in Kewaigue, wants to change the use of the former Carnival building – stripping it of public house status so it can be used for retail.

The pub business has been closed for some time, and the site can trace its history as a pub back to at least 1857, when it was known as the Pig and Whistle.

Since then it’s had a number of names - including The Globe, Casey’s and Strand 58.

In its application, the brewery says it wants to remove the cladding and signs associated with Carnival and replace it – although the new signs would need a separate planning application.

The plans also show proposals to remove the pub’s kitchen and replace it with an office.

Last summer Heron and Brearley put the bar on the market, with a price tag of around £1,350,000.
