Taxi price rise on the way?

Call for hike in prices from operators

Taxi operators have been calling for price hikes on the Island – but the committee in charge of prices says it’s made no decision yet.

The Road Transport Licensing Committee will lay its annual report before Tynwald when the court sits later this month.

In the document, it says it consulted for three months – and just over half those who got in touch wanted ‘a substantial increase’ in tariffs.

One driver asked for prices to go up by 20 per cent this year and 50 per cent over the next three years, while another thought it should cost more to get into a cab and people should be charged more for shorter distances.

There was also a suggestion of a premium tariff – which would cost people three times more on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The RTLC says the Island comes 166th in a league table of Britain’s taxi prices, far cheaper than Jersey or Guernsey.

And it says it’ll make a decision on prices when the Department of Infrastructure finishes its review into taxi prices at Ronaldsway Airport.
