Kennaugh wins Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

Cavendish retires from race

Manx cyclist and Olympic champion Peter Kennaugh has won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Geelong, Australia.

Kennaugh triumphed over a strong field, making a break 15 kilometres from the finish line to open up a 20 second gap over the chasing group, eventually winning by a margin of six seconds.

Australian Leigh Howard won a bunch sprint for second in the 174k event.

Kennaugh's Isle of Man-based Team Sky colleague, Ben Swift, was eighth.

Mark Cavendish retired.

The pre race favourite, Australian Simon Gerrans was fifth.
