Date confirmed for 2016 Tower Insurance Tower of Refuge Walk

by isleofman.com 25th January 2016
The 2016 Tower of Refuge Walk will be on Saturday May 7.

Sponsored for the fifth consecutive year by Tower Insurance the event, organised by Douglas Town Centre Management in aid of the RNLI, attracted more than 5000 people in 2015.

Town centre manager Michelle O’Malley said: ‘This has become one of the island’s biggest community events, thanks to the five-year support of Tower Insurance and the unabated interest shown by people of all generations in this historic landmark. The walk brings business benefits too, especially to the bars, cafes and restaurants in the town centre. And, because of the tide times, the date is later than in previous years, so there’s every chance that not only will the walk attract record numbers, but the weather may also be warmer, too.’

Tower Insurance managing director Peter Gallagher said: ‘The Tower of Refuge walk is one of the highlights in the island’s calendar of community events and is expertly organised by Michelle and her team with safety considerations always at the forefront.

‘The tower and Conister Rock exert an enduring fascination and their appeal, combined with the overwhelming generosity of the people of the Isle of Man, helps to raise substantial funds for the RNLI. It is for these reasons that Tower Insurance is pleased to be sponsoring the Tower of Refuge walk for the fifth successive year.’

The Tower Insurance Tower of Refuge escorted walk is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and instructions by the coastguards and stewards followed at all times.

Subject to weather and tidal conditions the walk is expected to begin in the early evening. For the latest news check out Douglas Town Centre Management’s Facebook page or contact Michelle O’Malley, MOMalley@douglas.gov.im, 696304.
