MNH dismayed at trams loss

Heritage body in dark over decision

Manx National Heritage has reacted with dismay at the news the capital's historic horse trams are to be axed.

A spokesman said the organisation is 'extremely disappointed' at the way the announcement was made by Douglas council - and has accused the authority of a U-turn over continuation of the service.

MNH has warned the loss of the historic tramway will have a major impact on Island tourism.

The Island's largest heritage organisation was taken by surprise at the stark news from Douglas town hall, released in a statement to local media this morning (22 Jan).

A spokesperson said the decision by councillors contradicts previous reassurances on the trams, given by the chief executive.

There's genuine shock at the lack of any consultation with Manx National Heritage, which says its doors have always been open.

MNH says the loss of horse trams will have a 'tremendous impact' on the Island's tourism sector, with a knock-on effect on hoteliers and other providers who rely on the visitor economy.

An MNH spokesperson has confirmed no one from the council raised concerns with them over an impending crisis facing this unique facet of the Island's social history.
