A big “Thank you” to members – senior, junior and mini (and their parents) who willingly gave up use of the indoor court last weekend so that the LTA could run a level 1 Award in Tennis Coaching. Whilst applications were slow coming in eventually eight club players worked hard and I gather from the course tutor Joe Hagan had a lot of fun. It was great to meet up with Joe again after many years when we were both involved with North West Regional coaching and Short Tennis as it was originally called. Joe is the Coach Education Manager for the Coach Education Provider Company inspire2coach which is based at The University of Warwick Tennis Centre.
Despite the cold weather – the indoor court isn’t heated! – the candidates were very enthusiastic and motivated. The level 1 is designed for working with red ball players from the tiny tots and upwards. These players, which included five from Albany, will be a real bonus for their clubs and the Island.
Joe said “I found my entire time on the Island a very positive experience and I greatly appreciate the kindness that was extended to me.”
Everything is back to normal this weekend with the Saturday sessions on from 12 noon to 4pm. We currently have approximately 50 children attending on a regular basis and always new ones coming for their three free taster sessions. I think the Club Coach, Ian Watson plus the other coaches Martin Feely and Sarah Breed plus the committee and parents are looking forward to the summer programme of competition and witness their progress. Any other children interested in trying tennis should ask their parents to contact Ian Watson (496293) or you can contact me (861497). For more information. Rackets are provided and children should wear non-marking soled trainers and warm clothing. You can just turn up at 12 noon and join in.
I will have some Auxesia sponsored junior shirts – sizes 4 – 14 on sale on Saturday at ?10 each.
Our annual Club Quiz Night will be slightly later this year early – mid March. I’ll have more information soon, from Quiz Master Stuart Colligon. The committee this weekend will be approving the club’s planned programme of events, which will be e-mailed to every member, so that you can plan your holidays to avoid missing out on club tournaments and social gatherings.
