Warning to pet owners over palm oil washed up on beaches

by isleofman.com 21st January 2016
Pet owners are being warned to exercise caution after reports that lumps of solidified palm oil are being washed up on the Island’s beaches, although the identity of the material has yet to be confirmed.

Such lumps have been known to arise as a result of discharges from ships. While palm oil is non-toxic to humans when pure, it can degrade or become rancid or contaminated at sea and may then pose a serious health risk if consumed.

Dogs seem to be particularly vulnerable and there have been historic reports of dogs dying after ingesting the substance.

Ralph Peake MHK, Member of the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture responsible for Environment, Safety and Health, urged those using beaches to take care.

‘We’d suggest keeping children and pets away from the deposits. If you come into contact with the substance, wash it off with soap or shower gel.

‘If you believe your dog has been in contact with the substance and are concerned about its health, contact your vet as soon as possible.’
