More young volunteer sports coaches have been rewarded for giving up their free time to encourage children to stay fit and healthy.
Each year, 15 to 18-year-olds take part in the Sure Sports Leaders’ Programme, run by the Department of Education and Children’s Sports Development Unit (SDU) and sponsored by the telecoms firm.
The teenagers attend a week-long Sure Sports Young Leaders’ Camp at the National Sports Centre in July, then coach at schools, community clubs, Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) activities and primary schools’ sports festivals through the year.
For some, their participation leads to a National Governing Body Level 1 coaching award.
Volunteers today received prizes from Sure Isle of Man after completing the most hours’ coaching in the autumn term.
Daniel Richardson, who attends St Ninian’s High School, received a ?100 Sure voucher from the company’s Victoria Carleton. Amy Smith (Queen Elizabeth II High School) received a ?50 voucher. James McNee (Ballakermeen High School) was unable to attend the presentation but will receive a ?75 voucher.
They are among 39 leaders who completed a combined total of 555 voluntary hours between September and December.
Tim Crookall MLC, Minister for Education and Children, said: ‘If children get involved in sport at an early age and maintain their fitness, they can avoid the many health problems associated with inactivity.
‘Sure Sports young coaches inspire children from throughout the Island to try their hand at, and take up, new sports and enjoy a fun hobby and a healthy lifestyle.
‘Meanwhile, the coaches gain invaluable experience that can boost their CV – and even lead to a career in sport.’
Sarah Jarvis, marketing manager for Sure Isle of Man, said: ‘These are exceptional local young people who give up a lot of time to the Sure Sports Leaders Programme, often when they have to study for exams or juggle other commitments. The skills they learn will be invaluable on their CVs when they apply to university or seek work.
‘Sure has long supported the Primary Schools’ Sports Programme that runs through the school year and our sponsorship of the Sports Leaders’ Programme complements it perfectly.’
Alex Jackson (St Ninian’s High School), who was named overall Sure Sports Leader of the Year 2014/15, will be invited onto the Villa Marina stage at the 2015 Isle of Man Sports Awards in March to receive an award.
Recruitment for the 2016/2017 Sure Sports Leaders’ Programme begins in February, when Year 11 students will receive presentations in school assemblies.
