Manx Gaelic and the ‘Beautiful Mars Project’

by isleofman.com 18th January 2016

Culture Vannin is delighted to announce the release of the Manx Gaelic version of the Beautiful Mars Project: Making Mars Speak Human. Culture Vannin have been working over the last few months to provide a Manx Gaelic version of the HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) which is the camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter one of the most powerful cameras kind ever sent to another planet. Its high resolution allows people to see Mars like never before.

The remarkable images of Mars and their Manx translations can be viewed on the Manx Tumblr account which accompanies the HiRISE website and which can be accessed here: http://beautifulmars-manx.tumblr.com/

There is also a Manx twitter feed of the Beautiful Mars project which can be followed here: https://twitter.com/HiRISEManx

Ari Espinoza of HiRISE who is based at the University of Arizona and who has been working with Culture Vannin on the project commented that, ‘we want to reach out to as wide an audience as possible, especially with languages that are underrepresented, like Manx. It’s an excellent opportunity to show the language in an unexpected, but dynamic manner: talking about planetary science and Mars! It might give people an incentive to learn more, and it provides a fantastic educational resource as, you will be amazed to see Manx used in such a manner.

Adrian Cain, Manx Language Development Officer for Culture Vannin commented that, ‘it has been a delight working on this project which helps promote the idea that Mars belongs to everyone. The images are quite remarkable and it’s a privilege that Manx accompanies them. It’s hoped that people will be both amazed by the images and surprised that Manx can be used in this innovative, modern and exciting manner.’
