Major refurbishment work is due to take place on the linkspan in Douglas Harbour. The first phase, the fitting of a new cylinder is hoped, subject to to the weather and tides, to be completed before the end of this month (January).
The large hydraulic cylinders, which are 12 metres long and weigh 9.5 tonnes, operating the structure have been in place for almost 16 years and are nearing the end of their operational life.
During this work the Ben my Chree will use the Isle of Man Steam Packet linkspan.
Minister Phil Gawne said: ‘The linkspan is an important part of our infrastructure and is in need of an overhaul as the cylinders are showing signs of significant wear and tear. This will be addressed as part of a programme of mid-life refurbishment of the linkspan.’
He added: ‘The Department’s engineers are waiting for a spell of good weather in order to install the new cylinder. If everything progresses smoothly it will be business as usual with no disruption to service.’
