50% increase in drink driving arrests this festive period

by isleofman.com 5th January 2016
The IOM Constabulary have released details of their Drink Drive Campaign held over the festive period (1st December 2015 till 4th January 2016) confirming that a total of 12 people were arrested for drink driving.

This figure represent an increase of 50% on all drink driving arrests compared to last year.  They believe the increase is due to officers being deployed in marked and unmarked vehicles in the right places at the right time and also as a result of members of the public contacting them regarding potential offenders. The Constabulary have extended their thanks to the public for their vigilance.

Of the 12 arrested, 2 people have been charged with failing to provide a sample, 5 people have been charged with driving whilst drunk, 4 people had blood taken from them and results are pending and 1 person was released with no further action.

Police Sergeant Steven Lapsley of the Roads Policing Unit commented: “I am happy that the Constabulary made 12 arrests this year in relation to drink driving however the fact that some individuals still choose this method of travel after having consumed alcohol is worrying. The chance of having a Road Traffic Collision is massively increased if driving with alcohol in your system and ultimately you could kill yourself or an innocent member of the public, it’s simply not worth the risk.

The slogan of ‘DRINK SAFE, DRIVE SAFE GO SAFE’ should not be forgotten just because Christmas is finished with. It should be everyone’s mentality every month of the year."
