A number of locals have been recognised in Her Majesty The Queen’s New Year 2016 Honours List.
John Aspden, retired Chief Executive of the Financial Supervision Commission, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). John played a key role in ensuring the Island has maintained and enhanced its position as a well regulated finance centre. A highly respected regulator, John was appointed Chair of the Group of International Finance Centre Supervisors (GIFCS) in November 2011, a position which he still retains.
Hugh Davidson, has been recognised for this services to charity including the H & S Davidson Trust, which has undertaken joint ventures with Save the Children to educate over 3,000 street children in Kolkata, and with Oxfam to more than double the income and empowerment of 11,000 very poor women and their families in Odisha (India) and north Bangladesh. Hugh has been the Vice President of Save the Children (IOM) since 2002, is a founder member and part funder of the One World Centre, aimed at raising awareness of larger global issues, and established One World Charity Challenge. Hugh has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
David Vick, retired Chief Executive of the Insurance and Pensions Authority, has been recognised for his leading role in the ongoing development, enhancement and implementation of the Isle of Man’s regulatory framework for insurance and pensions business, and in its growth as a major centre for such business. David has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Dorothea Gell has been recognised for her services to the Manx community and charities. Mrs Gell was a District Nursing Sister and Midwife for 34 years from 1953 to 1987 having trained at Noble’s Hospital, she continues to be involved with the local and wider community and is currently: Committee Member for Manx Mencap and manager of the Manx Mencap Charity Shop; Vice Chairman of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section; collector for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Mrs Gell has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).
