Manx National Heritage, the organisation responsible for protecting and promoting the Isle of Man’s heritage and culture, is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals to undertake the roles of Ornithological Warden and Estate Warden on the Calf of Man, a small island, approximately 1 square mile in size, off the southern tip of the Isle of Man. As a nature Reserve and Bird Observatory, the Calf is the ideal location to study bird life, flora and fauna. Around 33 species of birds breed on the Island annually.

The Ornithology Warden is responsible for monitoring and ringing of the resident populations of Chough, Manx Shearwater, Peregrine, Hen Harriers, Storm Petrel, Shag and many other passage migrant and sea bird species, as well as maintaining daily bird logs and all other necessary data in connection with the proper running of the Observatory. The post holder will have experience of Bird Observatory work including a relevant bird ringing permit (A class preferred) with endorsements and experience of monitoring and surveying open-nest and cliff-nesting birds.

The Estate Warden’s role encompasses habitat management and the general management of visitors to the Calf. These duties may include guiding visiting public groups, co-ordinating and organising volunteers and guests, dry stone walling, bracken and heather management as well as basic upkeep of the buildings and equipment on the Calf. On-going monitoring work in relation to the Manx Shearwater Recovery Programme and the control of the Brown Rat is also a priority. The post holder will have a relevant qualification or experience of wardening work with ideally, experience in wildlife surveys, particularly butterfly, moth and seal surveys, guiding groups, together with knowledge of coastal ecosystems and habitats. Practical knowledge of shepherding, dry stone walling, heather management and bird ringing experience would also be an advantage.

Both posts require a very flexible approach to working times as most work is outside normal office hours, especially at weekends. Both posts will be seasonal appointments from March to November. Living accommodation on the Calf of Man is provided with both positions.
