NOVEMBER LUNCH
The November lunch was attended by 33 members. Our Speaker was Ramsey Probus Club member Mike Southall whose topic was “Coins of the Isle of Man”. Mike's interest in the subject dates back to 1979. He has published an authoritative work on the subject. His fascinating talk was supported by many colourful slides showing the history of coinage in the Isle of Man from Celtic times to date. Unfortunately, the changes over time are too numerous to mention here. Many facts were explained. Of particular note is that many foreign coins were in circulation before the first privately issued Manx coin was issued in 1668 and that in times of coin shortage coins were cut into halves and quarters. We also heard about card money, tokens, methods of production and revaluation of coins over time. Few of us knew that there was so much to learn about coins. How do we know what coins were in circulation in the Isle of Man? They were discovered on the island over many years; largely by fortuitous accident.
DECEMBER LUNCH
The December lunch was attended by 33 members and by 24 members' guests. For the third year running we decided not to have a Speaker at our Christmas lunch and, once again, we found that this did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the event. All of those who attended enjoyed an excellent three course Christmas lunch which was prepared and served in festive surroundings by the staff of the Harbour Bistro. As an added surprise this year, we were also provided with crackers and mince pies. Well done Harbour Bistro!! Keep up the good work.
CHARTER LUNCH
Our 26th Charter Lunch takes place on Wednesday 13th January 2016 and your Council hopes that we will have an above-average attendance. Our guests will include His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood, the President of the Rotary Club of Ramsey, and Presidents, Officers and Members of other Island Probus Clubs.
WE WISH ALL OF OUR READERS A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR
