Manx Ices has been re-invented by Jim Kearns, the owner of the Silverdale restaurant and is the worlds’ first ice cream manufacturing facility powered by a re-furbished 18th century water wheel.
Jim, a self-confessed ice cream addict, commented: “I remember Manx Ices as a child especially the mint choc ices. When the opportunity came up to acquire the Manx Ices brand name and use the water wheel at Cregg Mill to produce it, I jumped at the chance.”
Manx Ices has been selling its award winning ice cream on a small scale since 2014 at Silverdale Glen and to selective foodservice customers. In 2014 they won the superior taste award at the ‘International Taste & Quality Institute’ in Brussels.
“All our 14 flavours of ice creams are hand-made at Cregg Mill using Manx milk and cream and the finest quality ingredients. I’ve wanted to produce a 1 litre pack for shops for a long time but didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the ice cream with the small production area we had.” Jim added.
In 2015 Manx Ices invested in additional production capacity at Cregg Mill and re-furbished the 18th century water wheel to produce the worlds’ first sustainable ice cream production method.
“We’ve had a great response from retailers to the Manx Ices story here on the island and in the UK. Especially important to them is that every time one of their customers buys a Manx Ices flavour, not only will they getting a great taste but also a product that is made from the finest quality ingredients and sustainable production methods.”
Jim will be starting tours of Cregg Mill in the New Year so that visitors to Silverdale Glen will be able to watch the water wheel generating electricity and see the Manx Ices ice cream being made.
Manx Ices is available in Tesco and served in selected Heron and Brearley houses.
