Thriving cross-border investment business Old Mutual International has announced it is sponsoring the Isle of Man Football Association’s Junior Football League for the 2015-2016 season, helping to provide equipment and training grounds for hundreds of local children.
The sponsorship will be focused primarily on assisting the Development League which is made up of teams of both boys and girls aged five to ten.
Wendy Ranft-Gerber, communications manager for Old Mutual International, said: “Support and development for this age group is really important as they are the sporting heroes of the future so we’re delighted to be a part of where it all begins.”
The sponsorship is one of a select few programmes which the Onchan-based company has committed to over the next year, covering sports, the arts and education.
Wendy said: “We hope to be able to make a difference by investing in the local community, laying foundations and creating prosperity for the future, starting from an early age.”
The island’s junior league is run by unpaid, dedicated volunteers and there are currently 1792 footballers registered, with 872 of those playing in the Development League. Training and matches take place on grounds across the Isle of Man and the Junior Football League relies heavily on sponsorship to fund pitch hire.
David Quirk, sponsorship coordinator and Isle of Man Football Association Development League committee member, said: “It is important for the island that we strive to enhance sport opportunities for everyone. Our aim is to bring football to as many children as possible, irrespective of their ability, in a fun, friendly and safe environment.”
The sponsorship will also allow the league to continue supporting the ‘RESPECT’ campaign, a national scheme run by the Football Association, which promotes high standards of personal behaviour and treatment of others by players, spectators, coaches and officials.
IOMFA Junior Football League secretary Steve Callister commented: “Football is an important part of maintaining children’s physical fitness, but it also teaches them certain life skills such as respect, team work and comradeship.”
Steve explained that as the Junior Football League is an FA Charter Standard league, they maintain the highest standards possible. He added: “Whilst participation levels are already the highest in the British Isles, we are constantly trying to improve and increase membership.”
Over the next few months, Old Mutual International will also help to establish the Fair Play award which will recognise one dedicated young footballer who shows true sportsmanship.
Wendy added: “I’m really looking forward to working with Junior Football and seeing how our support will benefit the players, no matter what their age or ability.”
