Introduction of anti discrimination laws close

Moves to outlaw discrimination against disabled people in the Island are due to move a step closer next week.

Tynwald will be asked to approve the phased introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act, covering provision of goods, facilities and services.

The Act places a duty on providers - including shops, government offices and local businesses - to ensure they are accessible by all members of the public, regardless of disability.

New laws will be brought in over four years, starting in January 2016 with the publication of a code of practice and guidance notes.

Other landmarks follow in December next year, when the anti discrimination laws will be enforced.

From January 2018, organisations must change their practices, policies and procedures in relation to disability.

Any changes to buildings or access to them must be complete by January 2020, when the Act is due to be fully implemented.
