15,000 boards seized in UK after multiple problems

Trading standards officials in the Island say they're keeping a close eye on sales of self-balancing scooters, amid growing safety fears.

The so-called hoverboards are among this year's must-have presents on many youngsters' Christmas lists.

But almost 90 per cent of those imported into the UK since mid October - 15,000 boards - have been seized and sent for testing.

Problems with cabling, plugs, chargers and switches have been widely reported, the defects causing boards to overheat and in some cases, catch fire.

Director of Trading Standards in the Island John Peet says they're in touch with local suppliers.
