Bus in river may be broken up

Crews unable to crane bus out of Laxey river in one piece

Engineers are assessing what work is needed to make safe the area around Laxey bridge, which collapsed during Thursday afternoon's torrential rain.

Thee structure in lower Laxey, a wall along the bank and a nearby junction are all now in a dangerous state.

A double-decker bus which toppled into the river as the bridge gave way, remains in the water.

The vehicle, an old model which was due to be replaced, is a write-off, and may be towed upstream and broken up.

Winching it out by crane is not an option due to the state of the riverbank.

Director of Public Transport Ian Longworth says protecting utility installations is the priority.
